Sheroz Chowdhury was arrested after being accused of execution-style murder, of playing the role of ISIL.
Police in Canada have arrested a man and charged him with aggravated murder for allegedly lying about his involvement in ISIS.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said in a statement on Friday that the criminal charges against Sheroz Chaudhry were drawn from “numerous” media interviews in which he described going to Syria in 2016 to join an armed group and commit acts of “terrorism”.
After a lengthy investigation, police said the 25-year-old was charged under the Criminal Code for fraud related to terrorist activity. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 16.
Burlington, a resident of Ntantario, told CBC in 2016 that he had worked with ISIL as a bureaucrat and had witnessed regular public beatings, beheadings and crosses.
He received additional notoriety on the award-winning podcast, Caliphate, by the New York Times, in which he accounted for the shooting of concerned civilians in the back of the head, blindfolded.
The accuracy of his statements, however, has been questioned in some media reports.
“Hoxies can create fear and delusion in our communities, posing a potential threat to Canadians, while we have decided otherwise,” said Christopher Diggle, RCMP’s superintendent.
“As a result, the RCMP takes these allegations very seriously, especially when individuals push the police into investigations by their actions in which human and financial resources are invested and diverted from other ongoing priorities,” de Cale said. RCMP Security Implementation Team.
The RCMP said it had collaborated with several other agencies during its investigation.
