Activision takes a new approach to opening the next size Call of Duty match.
The entry of 2020, demonstrable title Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, has yet to be officially unveiled, though leaks and rumors are sticking in like flies.
In a recent investor briefing, Activision said so Warzone—added the free to play battle royale game Call of Duty Modern Warfare and all emerging Call of Duty games – has revised the company’s disclosure strategy for this year Call of Duty.
Earlier, Activision would announce the upcoming game earlier in the year, typically with an announcement and a trailer. This year, the approach is radically different.
For one thing, in every other year we would know months ago about the new game. At least by May we would have a title, trailer and more than likely a release date. And although leaks have given us the title and at least a release window, we do not yet have an official trailer or gameplay footage.
Instead, we have endless teasers. Almost every day now we have come up with some new teaser, with coordinates to a bunker in Warzone as some mysterious remark as recordings or projector slide.
And it’s getting old.
I love a good puzzle. I love a handful of teasers to prepare gamers for a great reveal. The random timer or series of cryptic images. A mystery can be fun. It just stops being fun when it is dragged on for too long, and when we all know pretty well what the game will be all about.
De Call of Duty community is largely aware that the next game is a return to the Black Ops universe and that it will be established during the Cold War, probably during Vietnam or at least in part during that war. It is possible that it will exist for several years or even several decades –Black Ops 2 jumped completely and again between two different time periods.
How long can you really pull out teasers for a known secret? Not so long ago, that’s for sure. For some in the community, solving this elaborate puzzle is probably a lot of fun, but for many it’s just starting to feel like Activision and Treyarch are just not ready to see a game that will be released in a few months after all.
If you want to follow the ongoing ARG / puzzle head to the website pawntakespawn.com/TV. Personally, although I appreciate the creativity that goes into it, I would rather just announce the game with little or no fanfare. I think EA and Respawn did a great job Apex Legends completely out of the blue, with a bunch of top streamers showing it off at launch. I just have very little interest in looking tape after tape of old recordings to find hidden numbers and secret coordinates.
What do you take for all this? Is this something you enjoy or do you just want to see the game in action? Let me know Twitter as Facebook.
