California recorded its highest number of coronavirus infections in a single day on Tuesday, amid efforts to stop the reopening statewide.
The state registered 11,126 cases, the highest number since the pandemic began. The number of positive cases increased 3.3% in the last seven days and 47.2% in the last 14 days, according to state data.
With statewide tests more readily available, an increase in cases would be expected, but the positivity rate between test results has steadily increased to 7.3% in the past seven days. Hospitalizations have also hit a record high, according to state data.
In total, the state has reported 347,634 cases since the pandemic began and has seen 7,227 deaths. In the past 24 hours, there have been 140 new coronavirus-related deaths.
These grim records come when the Los Angeles and San Diego school districts, two of the state’s largest, made the decision to go online only in the fall, and the virus swept through California’s prison system, leading to He has been releasing up to 8,000 prisoners in an effort to curb the spread.
On Monday, Gavin Newsom, Governor of California, ordered the closure of all bars and all restaurants, cinemas, and museums to stop indoor operations. “It is up to all of us to seriously recognize that Covid-19 is not going to leave anytime soon,” he said at his press conference.
“We were able to suppress the spread of this virus. We were able to tear down the growth of this at first. We are going to do that again, ”Newsom said. “There is no doubt in my mind.”
Case numbers continue to rise in the United States, which has so far recorded more than 3.4 million cases and more than 137,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins figures. States like Florida and Texas have also recently established their own registries of new daily infections.
