California man released COVID-19 warning day before death

A California man who contracted the coronavirus after attending a party posted a disturbing warning on Facebook the day before his death.

Tommy Macías, 51, began showing symptoms a week after attending a party in early June at Lake Elsinore, about 70 miles outside of Los Angeles, NBC News reported.

On June 20, he wrote the tragic message expressing his regret for not following social distancing measures and guidelines for wearing masks and for putting his family at risk.

“Due to my stupidity, I put the health of my mother and my sisters and my family at risk. This has been a very painful experience, “he wrote.

“This is not a joke. If you have to go out, wear a mask and practice social distancing. “

Macías, a trucker, added: “I hope that with God’s help I can survive this.”

An official with the Riverside County Office of Vital Records told NBC News that Macías died of COVID-19 the next day.

Macías had tried to strictly follow the shelter order in place between late March and early June because he was at risk for diabetes, Gustavo López, his brother-in-law, told Yahoo News.

But Macias decided to attend the party after Governor Gavin Newsom said he would be loosening coronavirus restrictions, the outlet reported.

“I was in quarantine because I was overweight and had diabetes,” said López.

After the evening, one of Macías’ friends contacted him to let him know that he had tested positive for the coronavirus, and that he knew of his positive diagnosis when he attended the party, López told Yahoo.

But the friend falsely believed that since he did not feel any symptoms, he could not transmit the virus to others.

López said he knew of more than a dozen people hired COVID-19 after attending the party.

Macías was transported to a local hospital at approximately 11 a.m. on June 2 and placed on a ventilator at approximately 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. before he passed away around 9 p.m., Lopez said.

“I would do anything for everyone,” Lopez told Yahoo. “No questions asked.”
