Downtown Disney could face a serious reopening situation if California Governor Gavin Newsom declares it so. Effective immediately (July 1, 2020), a list of 19 counties is mandated to completely shut down indoor business operations, including restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, family entertainment and more. Exactly how everything will reopen (and when) is now up for grabs.

Downtown Disney can’t reopen with indoor operations

Downtown Disney is slated for a reopening on July 9, 2020, which is in a few days. After that, the Disneyland Resort will reopen sometime after July 4, due to a stay at the Governor’s office. Today’s specific news on indoor entertainment and indoor dining, in particular, is covered in Governor Newsom’s tweet that came out on Twitter just after 3 p.m. today, though he left some with more questions than answers.

This new mandate / orientation regarding indoor operations is supposed to be the rule for about three weeks, according to Fox journalist Elex Michaelson on Twitter (his tweet is below). It’s worth noting that all bars must stop working entirely according to the governor’s tweet and may compromise some of Downtown Disney’s operations, in part or in whole.

“This does not mean that restaurants close … but we are trying to take these concentrated activities and move them outdoors, which is one way to mitigate the spread of this virus,” Newsom said today.

As you may well know, we are still awaiting official news or guidance from Disney, Disneyland Resort and Disney Parks officials on exactly what will reopen and how, although we have plenty of ideas. Staples of Downtown Disney, restaurants like Naples Ristorante e Bar, Ballast Point, Earl of Sandwich and Black Tap offer patio seating. If indoor food ceases, patios may still function, unless the institution is classified as a bar, such as UVA Bar. Governor Newsom may choose to allow a restaurant or saloons to stick to serving food on patios, canning Alcoholic drinks entirely, but we’ll need more clarification as the re-opening of the Downtown Disney District approaches.
