In the Cherokee County School District of Georgia, more than 1,000 students, faculty, and staff members are under quarantine after Covid-19 reports were reported.
Hilary Porterfield, a parent of a high school student in the neighborhood, was told her daughter may have been exposed to the virus – six days after the potential exposure.
“It was horrible. It was my worst fear … coming out, “she said on CNN’s New Day.
Porterfield said masks are encouraged but not mandated, and there is an ineffective amount of contact tracking. In addition, her daughter said there were seat tickets for classes, but students did not follow through.
Porterfield said there was a recent email from the superintendent describing how masks stop the spread of coronavirus. “However, he has yet to commit to that mask obligation,” she said.
“I think he just does not want to admit that he was wrong, that he opened the schools with unsafe measures,” she said.
She is not “absolutely not” confident that appropriate safety measures will be taken to ensure that there are no other future outbreaks once the school is back in the person classes.
