Cal Ripken Jr. Reveals diagnosis of prostate cancer


Baltimore Orioles legend Cal Ripken Jr. was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February but is now cancer free after treatment.

Ripken, 59, revealed that news Thursday. He said the cancer was discovered early when he went to a urologist as a precaution.

The cancer was contained in Ripken’s prostate, and he had surgery in March. Ripken said he is now fully back and cancer free. He added that “it has been a few wonderful months.”

Cal Ripken jr. Wants to bring awareness with his story

Ripken said he believed he could raise awareness about the importance of early detection by sharing his story. He stressed the importance of going in for annual physiques, and encouraged others to go to a doctor and check.

Cal Ripken Jr. has not yet spoken to Trey Mancini

Ripken said he had not yet spoken to Orioles outfielder Trey Mancini. Mancini revealed that he had removed a malignant tumor from his colon in March. Mancini, 28, is undergoing chemotherapy, and will not play in the 2020 MLB season.

Ripken was diagnosed about the same time as Mancini, but the two have not yet spoken. Ripken said he was initially not vocal about his diagnosis, but is now ready to talk about it.

Ripken admitted that he would be open to talking to Mancini about his experience.
