A couple of weeks ago, GM CEO Barra promised that the canceled GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq disclosures would occur “in the not-too-distant future.” The date for the first of those two events was announced today: The Lyriq’s virtual debut will take place on Thursday, August 6, 2020 at 7 p.m. ET. It will air on the Cadillac media website.
In an official announcement, Cadillac wrote:
We will go behind the scenes and hear from the extraordinary team that makes the Cadillac vision a reality.
Building on more than a century of innovation, the Cadillac Lyriq marks the beginning of a new chapter for the brand, one that is all-electric and redefines the limits and limits of mobility and connectivity.
The Cadillac Lyriq was due to debut in person on April 2. That plan was delayed due to the pandemic.
The Lyriq two-row utility vehicle will be Cadillac’s first purely electric vehicle. It is slated for production in China first in 2021 before reaching the US in 2022.
As examples of innovation, Cadillac noted the brand’s use of a curved OLED dash display, AKG audio, and Super Cruise power steering.
In a video that accompanied the August 6 announcement for the debut, the poetic narrative talks about “newly discovered freedom” while displaying a picture of hands-free driving.
The video showed images of a fraction of a second of existing gas vehicles, as well as photos that could be details of the Lyriq.
Cadillac Design Director Brian Smith recently said this about Lyriq’s design:
We are starting a bit with our battery electric vehicles. It’s really about taking the crisp features and blending the muscle lines and beauty on the surface a bit more. The beautiful surface and strong silhouette with some really technical details and unusual graphics can give cars a futuristic and electrified presence.
Smith said handling the grill design presented a challenge.
We still want the car to have a strong face and recognizable graphic, but now we can have a sleek and close look with different ways of doing the details.
The Lyriq will be the first of a new generation of vehicles built on GM’s new next-generation modular EV platform. GM announced a wide range of specifications for the platform, including battery capacities between 50 kWh and 200 kWh. The letter will probably be in the middle of that range.
We suspect that it will be configured with dual motors for maximum power. GM’s Ultium platform provides a front-wheel motor rated at 180 kilowatts (241 hp), and the rear motor produces 250 kilowatts (335 hp).
That is all we know for now. More details will be announced on August 6.
