North Macedonia Prime Minister Zoran Zaev regrets Bulgaria’s blockade for the EU, writes AFP after an interview with Zaev, reports Nezavisen Vesnik.
The state leader told the agency that his neighbor to the east had presented him with a “nasty surprise.” Great anger has built up among sister peoples living on both sides of the border, Zaev said, but still expressed confidence that a step forward was possible.
I know it’s hard to get rid of a decade of pressure in a month, but don’t you think that realism is a necessary quality in politics?
Recalling that there is an absurdity in the whole problem, Zaev emphasized that any question about Macedonian identity is a “red line”. Every question about Macedonian identity is a “red line”. This is an issue related to self-determination, which is at the heart of the European project, Zaev said, quoted by Nezavisen Vesnik. We have shown how much we believe in European values, said Zoran Zaev. Now that Europe had to show its European values, they were not there, he said, alluding to a commitment to the name change, the Skopje daily reported. Bulgaria’s blockade of North Macedonia’s dreams of joining the European Union contradicts the bloc’s values and causes a lot of bitterness among us, Zaev said.
