The Colosseum is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the world. It was visited by 7.5 million people last year. The main objective of the reconstruction is that the visitors can see the Colosseum from a new perspective, that is, from the center of the arena.
“A major technological intervention should give visitors the opportunity not only to see the dungeons and gladiator rooms in the Colosseum, but also to gaze at their beauty from the center of the arena,” said Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini .
The floor and all mechanical components must be closable to protect the lower levels in case of rain. Cultural events are planned on stage: concerts, thematic theater performances. The idea of giving the Colosseum a second life is not new, and opponents have always pointed to the difficulty of keeping the amphitheater as a concert hall.
Reconstruction will start in January 2021 and be completed in 2023, and the government is ready to allocate as much money as necessary.
