Until Act 16, the speed limit between Slivnitsa and Dragoman will be 110 km per hour
For the first time in years, a section of the highway, which is about a third of the total, is opened to traffic without a solemn ribbon cutting. The 17 kilometers of the “Europa” highway between Dragoman and Slivnitsa are completely ready and traffic on them is allowed since yesterday. The speed limit is currently 110 km per hour for cars and 90 for trucks, since the highway does not yet have Law 16. When it is issued, the limit for cars will be 140 km per hour.
The section, which is almost entirely on flat ground but has many facilities, was built by GBS half a year ahead of schedule. The contract, signed 2 years ago, was for just over BGN 117 million and the financing comes from the budget. Construction supervision is from a partnership with a leading partner “Plan Invest Plovdiv” EOOD.
The section passes near the famous Aldomirovsko Swamp, which is a protected area and is a favorite Sofia fishing spot. To protect the biodiversity of the area, reptile trails have been made, which will pass through specially constructed passages under the road. Noise walls and bird nets have been installed, and mud traps have been installed for the water draining from the road, so as not to contaminate the waters of the swamp.
Until recently, the traffic on this section was only one of the lanes, which was actually the old lane of the two-way highway from the capital to Kalotina. During the modernization, another was built and the old one was extended to the dimensions of a road.
Along the new section of the road are built two large road junctions with energy efficient lighting, the number of all main facilities is 11: 5 underpasses, 5 overpasses, a bridge over the river Slivnishka, as well like 7 sites for recreation and emergency stops.
The new section is practically in the middle of the future highway. Construction of the 15 kilometers from Dragoman to Kalotina began in February by a consortium around Strabag and will be completed in early 2022. This section is located in semi-mountainous terrain and is slightly more expensive: 165 million BGN. the money comes from the Europe Connected Facility and the budget.
A technical project is still being prepared for the section between Slivnitsa and the capital, which will be on a completely new route.
