The coronavirus crisis could spark a new wave of layoffs. The UN warns of this. The organization’s statistics show that 120 million workers worldwide are at risk.
Part of the business in our country can already get back on its feet, but another cannot even start a business. What do the data from the National Institute of Statistics show? In the second quarter of 2020, the telecommunications operators in Bulgaria emerged from the crisis with a growth of 2.9% compared to last year. Even postal and courier operators have benefited from growth of 21%. Unfortunately, only they and the IT business manage to cope without much consequence at the moment. At the other pole is everything related to tourism and travel, where the decline exceeds 90%.
Almost 4 months after the end of the state of emergency, part of the business in our country still cannot resume its activities. Such is the case with one of Sofia’s travel agencies, which deals with trips abroad. We are an agency that deals mainly with outbound tourism and we hope that as of September, trips to different destinations will gradually begin again. Especially for the relatives, ”shared the tour operator Dragomir Yankov in front of the Nova TV camera. Tourists avoid even neighboring countries due to PCR testing and quarantine requirements. This is the case, for example, of one of the most popular destinations in September: Turkey. The company reports a 90% drop in revenue compared to last year. They have already laid off staff in the spring and hope this will not happen again.
At the same time, one of the largest telecommunications companies in Bulgaria not only does not lay off workers, but also hires staff. The reason – increased consumption during the pandemic. Data from the Employment Agency show that there is currently no threat of layoffs due to crisis. The number of people hired is even increasing. “I would say that there are currently no intensive layoffs. We looked at the other process: intensive hiring. And these are the sectors that stopped: the processing industry is a leader in hiring people at the moment,” explained Ivo Ivanov from the Agency for Job.
It is not clear if this trend will continue until the end of the year. Unemployment growth is expected to be more than 2 percent higher for December than in 2019. Or about 280,000 people are public.
