Will it still be one of the most popular children’s facilities of the past? After Blagoevgrad and Plovdiv decided to remove sandstones from playgrounds, will other cities do the same? What is the reason and is it related in any way to the fears of COVID-19 infection?
Sandboxes for children are about to go down in history. Or at least in Blagoevgrad, where a year ago they made this decision for the first time.
“Instead of the sandboxes there will be a position of new entertainment games, facilities that comply with the regulations: lady type, swing, swing, slide,” explained Eng. Daniela Paleva from the municipality of Blagoevgrad.

A year later, city parents seem to approve of the separation of the most popular outdoor play facility for children.
“I don’t accept having a sandbox, I don’t live in Bulgaria, but in England, and there are no sandstones because they carry viruses. There shouldn’t be. “A lot of dogs and cats go out there, it is not hygienic,” said the parents.
Meanwhile, the example of Blagoevgrad followed throughout the Plovdiv region, where the regional health inspection removed sandstones from the territory of kindergartens. On the basis that they carry a high risk of infectious and parasitic diseases. And its disinfection carries the risk of allergies. The prescription, explained by the health inspection, had nothing to do with the distribution of COVID-19. However, there was another reason.
“Children are standing in the sand all the time and they are immobilized. A folk dance game or something else is a better alternative than the sandbox game, “says Dr. Tsvetana Ivanova, Director of Public Health at RHI – Plovdiv.
What measures will be taken against COVID-19 in European schools?

The National Center for Public Health and Analysis is also against the principle “No sandstone, no problem.” Specialists do not approve of the decision of the health inspection in Plovdiv. According to their analysis, there are no intestinal parasites in the sandstones and no heavy metal contamination. What they do find, however, are foreign bodies, such as wood, plastic, and glass.
