The ranking of two Bulgarian teams – Ludogorets and CSKA for the Europa League groups gives a new perspective to national football – our representative to enter the group stage without playing qualifications.
UEFA made the sieve very dense to enter the main phase of the Champions League. Only 4 teams from the 12th place associations will compete with the best: Salzburg (12th), Olympiacos (14th), Midtjylland (16th) and Ferencvaros (33rd). However, the football venue gave the rest of the champions another chance and they received 12 places in the Europa League, one of which is for our champion Ludogorets.
CSKA’s achievement can be evaluated as a very significant advance, because only 13 teams qualified for the Europa League groups after the screenings. Only CSKA, Lech (Poznan) and Apoel (Beersheba) achieved 4 wins each and started from the first qualifying round. The “Army” will add a coefficient because they have only played in 3 seasons.

In the last decade, Ludogorets have been a regular participant in the main phase of the Champions League and Europa League, but this does not give Bulgaria great chances to climb the ranking that determines our European participants. Our country was permanent after the 20th position, and was even on the verge of falling from the top 30. This caused the home teams to start from the early qualifying rounds and, with the exception of Razgrad’s “eagles”, they are among those not featured in the draw, which assigns tough opponents.
When determining the rankings, the score points are divided in half and carry little weight. This year a special approach was taken due to the fact that the transplants were in one match. So to match the other seasons, 3 points are awarded for a win, 2 points for a draw, and 1 point for a loss. The normal approach is 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw.
CSKA with achievements 4 accumulated victories 12 points, which are divided into 2 and for classifications counted as 6,000. Ludogorets achieved 2 wins and 1 loss, equal to 7 points, happening after transformation 3,500. Lokomotiv (Plovdiv) has the same scheme 4 points become 2,000. Even Slavia with her loss add a factor of 0.500. In total, Bulgaria has a total of 12,000 pointswhich are divided by the number of participants 4 becomes 3,000. This puts us only for this season together with Serbia in eighth place.

This is misleading because all strong countries back us. The first 4 federations: Spain, England, Italy and Germany only had one participant so far, starting in the second qualifying round for the Europa League. And yet its proportion is close to ours. Spain and England add 2,928 with three victories each. This is due to the 16 extra points they receive for participating in the group stage of the Champions League. Each team that ranked among the best received an additional 4 points, with 26 of the teams entering the pools by right.
From now on, the points will be counted in full. Thus, each victory by Ludogorets or CSKA will add 0.500 points to the national coefficient, and tie 0.250 points. Coming out of the group stage of both teams, which is completely realistic, will add at least 3,500 points to the Bulgarian odds.
The opportunity to fight the best is unrealistic, because the scheme is done completely in their favor. But there is a good chance in 2-3 years of putting a team in the group stage without qualifying. We currently occupy position 23 with 19,375 points, and the trend is upward. Under current regulations, the champion of the eleventh association enters the groups. The same goes for the first representative of the 13th Europa League Association. Thus, this season Ajax in the Champions League and Sparta (Prague) in the Europa League closed the list of preliminary participants in the group stage. Ajax, of course, automatically received 4 bonus points without a game.

The ranking is made with the results of five seasons, valid throughout the year. This means that The current ranking will determine the European participants in the 2022-2023 season.
Currently Ukraine is 11th with 28,100 points and Scotland 13th with 28,875. The Scots are a very interesting case that can serve as an example. After the Rangers were expelled to the fourth level of the local pyramid, this association was left with only one carrier: Celtic. Therefore, the islanders had permanently stayed behind post 20 and were moving around us. With the Rangers’ return to the international arena, the big two enter the groups regularly and the odds have increased. With a strong turnout this season, it is quite possible that the champion will enter without a game among the strongest in the 2022-2023 season. A separate issue is that Celtic, like Ludogorets, continue their participation in Europe thanks to their easy opponents in the playoffs, due to their high odds. The “Clover” was even in the first polls of the Europa League, without shining with his game.
Some of the countries before us – Denmark, Cyprus, Serbia and Switzerland – put up just one team each, automatically reducing their chances of accumulating points. Sweden, which is ranked 22nd, has lost all its representatives and will be easily overtaken. Behind Bulgaria, only Norway, Romania, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Poland and Ireland have 1 representative each and it would be difficult to be a threat.
Then Ludogorets and CSKA will play for the other Bulgarian teams. It is no wonder that in 2024 Levski enter the Champions League group stage without a match. Lokomotiv (Plovdiv) to start from the third qualifying round for the Champions League, which guarantees a minimum place in the Europa League. Beroe, as the Cup winner, should also enter the groups directly. Someone will ask: “Where are Ludogorets and CSKA?”
The answer is that they will also participate because up to 15th place, there are 5 participants in European tournaments.
