Why is there no second wave of the pandemic in China?

As Europe is once again in the grip of a pandemic, the official number of coronavirus infections in China has been low for weeks. There are no deaths and the number of new infections per day almost never exceeds 100. How is this possible? Why is China doing so well to prevent the second wave from wiping out Europe?

More than 4,000 new cases and a record number died from COVID-19 per day

One reason: Authorities are responding quickly with quarantine measures and massive testing to detect outbreaks like those in the northwest region of Xinjiang. In the city of Kashgar, for example, more than 4 million people were tested in a matter of days, he said. German wave.

In addition, entry restrictions continue to be applied, which provide for a strict two-week quarantine in special hotels.

European countries continue to impose measures against COVID-19

Strict control

The controlling power that authorities have in authoritarian China is unthinkable in Western democracies. Personal rights and freedoms, the protection of personal data – all this does not play any role for Beijing in monitoring contact persons, for example. Mobile apps that accurately track people’s movements have become a part of everyday life, and anyone entering a restaurant, cafe, or store must sign up by scanning a special code.

And more: when there are signs of a new outbreak of infections, the restriction of public life and the enforcement of quarantine are strictly controlled. In the summer, for example, when infections broke out in a Beijing market, all employees were banned from leaving the city. A number of restrictions were immediately returned; for example, elementary schools remained closed.

Epidemiologist: It is possible that after 3 weeks there are 360 deaths with COVID-19 per day.

At the same time, China is systematically expanding its testing capacity. One testing center is provided for every million inhabitants, which in the event of a local outbreak can perform up to 30,000 tests per day. It is mandatory that each test campaign last no more than one week In the eastern Chinese port city of Qingdao, for example, where an outbreak broke out in early October, up to 11 million tests were carried out in a matter of days.

Previous epidemic experience

Another reason for China’s good balance: After SARS and bird flu, people know how important it is to protect themselves. There are no discussions in the country about the use of masks, state protection measures are not usually questioned and trust in the government is high. Most people believe that health is more important than freedoms or the protection of personal data. In China, it is not possible to complain to the courts against the measures or to protest against them in the streets.
