Today marks the 30th anniversary of the removal of the pentacle from the pylon of the Casa de la Fiesta in the center of Sofia. The red star, one of the symbols of communism in Bulgaria, was shot down on October 4, 1990, shortly after 9 a.m.
The scarlet pentacle, which has proudly crowned the House of the Party for years, is not only the most suffered communist shrine, but also the most unjustly overthrown. The pentagram was the first repressed symbol of the past regime, torn from the roof of the Red Citadel on October 4, 1990.
However, Operation Down the Pentateuch was by no means a democratic anarchy. Rather, it was preceded by a decision by the main political forces in parliament, including the BSP, which adopted a declaration to remove non-traditional political symbols from public buildings, flags and anthems.
But what happened to the ruby star?
Bulgaria still has many public buildings, topped with dusty pentacles, but a national flag and a national anthem. The removal of the pentagram was preceded by unrest across the country with the Party House burning, during which Plamen Stanchev nearly set himself on fire.
This led to the early morning of October 4, when a helicopter began circling the pentacle at 7 o’clock. Pentacle dismantling experts from Sofia-based company Public Construction have taken to the roof. The first attempt to separate the pentacle ends in complete collapse, on the edge of the cripple. A few hours later, the second attempt was successful.
However, after a while, the commander of the operation, Asen Panayotov, then deputy director of the Finance and Economic Department at Red Headquarters, will use the pentacle to be removed once every three minutes at 9:00 a.m. on 4 October. It was as if the yellow cobblestones had seen another movie and had not witnessed the pain of the first separation from communism.
By the way, Comrade Asen Panaytov has the right to versify, because he is the man who commanded the parade during the initial installation of the pentagram.
The pentacle itself is shrouded in mythology. To this day, no one knows which of the mythologies has something to do with reality. The fate of the Fallen Pentacle is shrouded in all kinds of rumors and speculation. One of the rumors is that with the communist symbol dotted with rubies, the foreign debt of Bulgaria has been paid.
According to another rumor, we have returned it to Russia. And many people believe that the removed ruby pentacle is now in the Museum of Socialist Art. This, it turns out, is light years from the truth. Today, the iron skeleton of the star’s first prototype, made of raw iron and red glass, is rusting away in the museum. This rough iron and red glass prototype has long been dusting and rusting in the backyard of Sofia’s central bathroom.
The curse of the Kremlin
Perhaps because of the Kremlin’s curse on the world’s most modern communist star, she is taking her own cursed path, acquaintances whisper. It is blasphemy to suppose that on October 4, 1990, the helicopter did not lift the modern star but the antediluvian … On the same date, the scarlet pentacle, whatever it was, rose on a second attempt, and the helicopter, who knows why he takes it and lands it on the field of … Dolni Bogrov.
However, at dawn the next day, at 5 in the morning, a military truck loaded her onto its trailer and took her back to the Casa de la Fiesta. It was then that its diameter of 2.5 m was established and to be taken to Todor Zhivkov’s garage, the truck tires had to be dropped. According to Asen Panayotov, it was in Daddy’s garage that the golden moldings of the shrine were removed and the gold obtained in this way, 2 kg of gold flakes, was duly delivered with a BNB protocol.
Rubies happen to be multilayer red technical glasses! … But the strong smoke also disappears, without knowing how and where, and only the skeleton remains in dad’s garage, that is. the iron armor of the pentacle, which was later sold for scrap. After a while, the scarlet star skeleton blooms again, this time in the back corner of the Central Sofia Bath.
The corner belongs to the Museum of Old Sofia, but is inaccessible to visitors. Experts at the Stara Sofia museum reveal that the skeleton had previously matured for many years in a warehouse at Iskar station. Today, rusty iron matures in the Museum of Socialist / Totalitarian Art, and no one knows if it was the one that held up the antediluvian scarlet star?
What did they get off the roof?
The answer to the question of what was removed from the roof of the Party House on October 4, 1990, is found in Decision №648 of July 28, 1984 of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Bulgaria. With the decision in question, the party’s highest body approved the idea of designing and rebuilding the five-pointed star on the tower of the Party House, similar to the ruby star on the Kremlin tower in Moscow.
The foreign trade organization “Technoimportexport” carries out the purchase, delivery and installation of the ruby star. According to the responsible business factors, at that time it was made of synthetic ruby and had a diameter of 3 meters. However, this has nothing to do with the truth. Because the Moscow condition is that the Bulgarian star is smaller than the Soviet one, and in the end its diameter turns out to be 2.5 m.
On top of that, the gold plating of the pseudo-ruby star was done at the Komuna factory in Sopot. The power of the lamps that illuminated the pentacle throughout the day is 3700 watts. However, outdoor lighting is for insurance only. Because after its installation, the Bulgarian ruby star №2 shines with … its own light. Like the one above the Kremlin.
Unlike its antediluvian predecessor, which glows with reflected light and is illuminated throughout the day by powerful spotlights hung from the surrounding buildings, the modernized version has its own radiance. Like the Kremlin. For the production of its Bulgarian likeness, Bulgaria has paid more than 573,246 rubles for transfer and another 14,643 for additional transportation and installation costs.
The decision to replace the old star, which glowed with reflected light illuminated by spotlights from the surrounding buildings, rather than shining from within, was made by the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party in 1984. The replacement request started with a file to Comrade Kruchinin. The CPSU. The letter he sent described the replacement as a wish of the Bulgarian workers to have such a star on the eve of the thirteenth congress of the Communist Party of Bulgaria in 1986.
Soviet specialists, after becoming familiar with the conditions in the Party House, estimated that the ruby star should be 3 meters in diameter, its maximum thickness in the center should be 70 cm, its supporting part should be 2 m and the total weight should not exceed tons and 200 kg.
Within the parameters of the luminous miracle thus defined, there is a light source that distributes the light flux evenly over all facets of the ruby at a power of 5 kW. The individual vessels are 80 by 30 cm in size. Atmospheric parameters for the star’s self-sufficiency range from minus 27.5 degrees to plus 37.4 degrees.
After all, the Bulgarian red star has more extras than the Kremlin. The construction may be from Moscow, but the project is by the Bulgarian architect Professor Ivan Ivanchev. And all this is … inadmissible. Thus, the Bulgarian star has been reduced from 3 to 2.5 m.
