Which vaccine is the best? Germany gives an attempt to answer
Serious side effects after vaccination against COVID-19 remain an absolute exception. After nearly 9 million vaccines were administered in Germany, the Paul Ehrlich Institute, which is responsible for vaccine safety, estimates that only 0.3 out of every 1,000 doses are suspected of having serious side effects.
Hence the institute’s conclusion: vaccines are “an effective measure to cope with the pandemic, according to the Robert Koch Institute. By March 12, 8.8 million vaccinations had been performed in Germany. Pfizer, 300,000 were administered Moderna doses and 1.5 million immunizations were administered with the AstraZeneca vaccine.
To date, a total of 19,194 suspected cases of adverse reactions or complications have been reported, of which 10,500 after vaccination with BioNTech / Pfizer, 7663 after vaccination with AstraZeneca and 736 cases after vaccination with Moderna.
A total of 2,287 cases of serious side effects were recorded.
Paul Ehrlich’s serious effects are understood as those side effects “in which patients must be treated in the hospital or the reactions can be defined as medically significant.”
Of these, 1728 were related to the BioNTech / Pfizer vaccine, 352 to the AstraZeneca vaccine, and 113 to the Moderna vaccine.
As a percentage of vaccines administered, the fewest cases of serious side effects occur with the AstraZeneca vaccine, according to a study by Paul Ehrlich.
Following the temporary cessation of vaccination with AstraZeneca, as of March 19, a total of 14 cases of post-vaccination thrombosis had been reported and two patients had died.
Two other suspected cases are known after vaccination with BioNTech / Pfizer.
Additional research is currently underway to see if there is a direct link between vaccination and complications, Paul Ehrlich said.
According to the institute, since the start of the vaccination campaign in Germany, there have been a total of 351 deaths with suspicions of a possible link between death and vaccination.
In all these cases, the deceased were vaccinated between several hours and 40 days before death.
Of these, 286 cases were related to the BioNTech / Pfizer vaccine, four cases were related to Moderna and AstraZeneca.
For the others, it is not known which vaccine was given to the person who died later.
The institute states that the majority of these 351 cases involve patients with a number of comorbidities.
The usual side effects
Regarding the usual complaints after immunization, different reactions were observed with the three vaccines.
With BioNTech / Pfizer, vaccinated people more often complain of injection pain, headache, and fatigue.
The AstraZeneca vaccine is characterized primarily by flu-like symptoms, chills, and fever. And with Moderna, a skin rash often occurs.
