Comment from Associate Professor Penka Petrova
Last week, good news came from Bulgarian scientists about a coronavirus vaccine. It was clear that his prototype should be ready for the New Year.
“A prototype means that the vaccine is assembled. This is a protein vaccine that will be encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles and tested against a special humanized mouse model. We will have a prototype to place mice and to design the experiment in humanized mouse models until the new year, “announced Associate Professor Penka Petrova, Director of the Institute of Microbiology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
UK to test whether BCG vaccine protects against COVID-19
“Right now we are on the program, but our colleagues in Europe, especially from the pharmaceutical giants, are way ahead. However, we should not have high hopes for a rapid vaccine with them,” he added.
Associate Professor Petrova explained that there are about 10 large companies that are already testing large numbers of healthy volunteers. “Their experiments will end in the spring of 2021, then the experiments with problem groups will begin: the elderly and those with chronic diseases. They announced that this experiment will end at the end of 2022. Then we can hope that there will be a vaccine for the entire population of the Earth, ”he said.
“NOVA Topic”: The Role of the BCG Vaccine Against COVID-19
“A great quality of our vaccine is that it will eventually be able to be administered not only by injection, but there have also been attempts to administer it as an aerosol. Initially, the experiments with mice will be done this way and, if they happen correctly, they will be tested in humans. This may reduce the side effects that exist with the other vaccine, “said Associate Professor Penka Petrova.
