When will the shopping centers open?

Shopping centers remain closed. As before, only banks, insurance offices, pharmacies, supermarkets, open-air restaurants and cinemas can continue to operate in them. But what about the stores? The Bulgarian Retail Association (BRA) and the Bulgarian Dry Cleaning Association (AHPB) through the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce sent an official letter to Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, specifying two things:

one) The retail sector employs almost 295,000 people who are currently on the job market or on unpaid leave. The bankruptcy of retailers will mean that the new unemployed remain at the state’s expense. If they do not operate, merchants are objectively unable to pay taxes and various financial obligations to the state. In addition, many of them have bank loans and are in real danger of not being able to pay them off in the future, which will create additional problems in the banking system.

2) Dry cleaning workshops are practically helping to combat the spread of the epidemic, using modern ozone cleaning technology, which effectively removes almost 100% of bacteria, mites and other known tissue and fabrics. The studios are generally located near the supermarkets in the respective shopping centers and their opening will not hinder the introduced control of the flow of people. The studio work concept does not include seats, but works through counters, allowing the necessary social distance to be successfully maintained. In addition, they have autonomous ventilation.

Both organizations believe that with a precise organization and compliance with the necessary sanitary and hygienic requirements, the opening of points of sale in the territory of shopping centers would not complicate the epidemiological situation, but would seriously reduce the negative effects on the economy.

“In relation to the above, we express our willingness to discuss a specific date on which shopping centers will be able to resume their activities, as is the case in many countries in Europe. Of course, the opening will take place in accordance with all the measures of safety introduced by orders of the Minister of Health. This specificity will allow the members of BRA and AHPB to plan and organize their work appropriately and in accordance with the requirements, “says the conclusion of the letter from the two branch organizations to the Prime Minister.
