“I am negative about COVID-19. This showed a second consecutive test,” Prime Minister Boyko Borissov announced on Tuesday, shortly before welcoming the Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia, Zoran Zaev, to Bulgaria and maintaining a meeting with him. Borissov learned that he was infected with the coronavirus on October 25 and spent his quarantine at home, working remotely all the time, writes the Retro newspaper.

Indeed, during his many years of political experience, Borisov did not have to go many times to the hospital or to medical attention.

For the first time in 2011, the Prime Minister said in an interview on then-TV7 that he suffered from ischemic heart disease. “I also have ischemic heart disease. Everyone who has high blood pressure suffers from such a disease,” Borisov said 9 years ago, explaining that he strictly monitors his condition, regularly sees doctors for preventive examinations and takes blood pills. And then he approached his problems with a sense of humor, saying that he often argued with doctors. “Doctors say, ‘Don’t go to the sauna and don’t run so much,’ but I do.”

More dramatic in terms of health for Borisov was 2013, when in just one week he was admitted twice to Lozenets Hospital due to hypertensive crises, general fatigue and general malaise. The Prime Minister was hospitalized for the first time with arterial hypertension with values of 190/110 in the Government Hospital on February 25, 2013. Then the doctors explained that high blood pressure had also affected ischemic heart disease, which the first Minister had suffered for years. After spending three days in the hospital, the prime minister, who was resigning at the time, was discharged and specialists advised him to rest, avoid physical exertion and severe stress. On March 3 of the same year, however, he was again admitted to the Government with high blood pressure values - 180/100, general fatigue and general malaise. Both times, she had to have systems turned on in addition to other medications to lower her high blood pressure.

Yet for a long time, over the years, it has only been brought out by sports injuries that it brought to the soccer field. A total of four times the prime minister underwent emergency surgery for a torn meniscus.

He first suffered a serious injury to his right leg while serving as mayor of Sofia during a soccer match in May 2009. He was then transferred to a public hospital with severe fractures and torn muscle ligaments. History repeated itself in 2013, when he had to undergo complex surgery on his left knee, again for a torn meniscus with dislocation. Initially, Borisov tried to stabilize himself by injections, but later it turned out that the intervention of the scalpel was inevitable. The operation was then performed by the head of the arthroscopic trauma clinic at Sofiamed Hospital, Deputy Prof. Dr. Antoni Georgiev, and lasted 1 hour and 10 minutes. the same place for the second time in early 2015. Although the incident had occurred a few days before the operation, the prime minister stoically endured the pain and refused to postpone his meetings in the Council of Ministers. Eventually, he was readmitted to Sofiamed and adjunct professor Antoni Georgiev again performed a 2-hour operation on his meniscus, after which the prime minister immediately began emergency rehabilitation procedures so that he could move his leg quickly and meet with the then The head of the FBI, James Comey. However, for a time, Borisov moved on crutches until the functions of his right leg were fully restored, and he called his cabinet ministers to his home to sit down.

He was last admitted to the hospital in the summer of 2017, when he injured his meniscus for the fourth time in a row. “In my case, it’s like the saying: ‘If you stayed still, you wouldn’t see a miracle,'” joked the prime minister, who was injured again on the football field and once again trusted the golden hands of the Asoc. Prof Antoni Georgiev, who ran the complex. operation in Sofiamed. After each intervention, he warned the prime minister to learn a lesson and stop playing football and tennis, but he did not strictly follow the recommendations. Only recently did he become more responsible for his health, but in 2019 he was once again tempted by football and recorded two phenomenal goals for the Bistrita Tigers against Lokomotiv (Plovdiv).
