The balance at the end of the year is quite relative. Governments point to a long list of successes. Critics often cite many of them as failures. Smart analysts will find arguments in both directions. They will get some benefit from the government, the sarcasm of the critics. The conclusions range from “We did a lot for the people” to “History does not remember such a misfortune.”
Again, both sides are right, because the rulers and their defenders are people and they have really done a lot for themselves. And 10% of scandals during the year are enough to prove the latter.
Let’s look at some components of the 10 percent.
In 2020, Bulgaria retained all the last places in the EU related to quality of life. The poorest, the sickest, the most dying, the most corrupt, the most illiterate, the oldest, the most emigrants per capita, the least investment, etc. until the black paint runs out …
No member of the cabinet or the ruling coalition has ever commented on these statistics. If a journalist is afraid to ask such a question, I can’t think of one, we listen: everything is a legacy of the communists, we / I are the only anti-communists. A universal and irritating cliché that, besides everything, is not true, because more than 60 percent of the coat of arms were members of the Communist Party of Bulgaria, led by its leader Boyko Borissov.
Borisov: We are building roads that no one has built before.
The truth: Yes, they are being built, but terribly slow and terribly poor quality. The rest of the roads give us another last place in the EU road network.
Government: We develop tourism, we support the industry during the epidemic.
The truth: Larger hotels are supported, most of which are owned by people close to the government. Small and medium restaurants and hoteliers are dying.
Tomislav Donchev, Deputy Prime Minister: Another 1.5 billion levs are needed for e-government.
The truth: At age 16 we hear promises that are not being kept. The obvious mess with ambulances, patients, hospitals, doctors, number of beds, medicines, pharmacies and all the other problems that suffocate the healthcare system is due to the lack of electronic devices. However, until now, doing nothing has consumed more than BGN 2 billion.
Denitsa Sacheva, Minister of Social Affairs: In the field of social policy, the government has done a lot and continues to do so. Borissov: We increase the salaries (mainly of civil servants and politicians) and we give 50 BGN to each pensioner.
The truth: According to experts, if in the last 10 years the misappropriation of funds from EU programs and public procurement had been limited by 40 percent, pensions and average salary would have been 2-3 times higher. This is 200 to 300 percent of today. You draw your own conclusions.
The authorities and the Attorney General in one voice: The judiciary is working well, the fight against corruption and the oligarchy has never been as intense as now.
The truth: Bulgaria ranks last among EU countries in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, Brussels noted and expects more serious results from high-level corruption cases. The structure and functioning of the Supreme Judicial Council are also a matter of concern, according to the EC. The Attorney General plays a crucial role in the College of Prosecutors and in a number of activities of the SJC, which is a serious problem noted long ago by the Venice Commission.
Borisov: Someone put bills in my drawer and took pictures of me sleeping. Some “very nice lady” like Mata Hari. The prosecution: We are ending the investigation. The only hypothesis of a crime in the case, declared by the state prosecutor’s office, is related to the assumptions of the witnesses that “the attached video and photos reflect a specially arranged interior with belongings, to present a certain negative image of the prime minister. from Bulgaria, Boyko Borissov “.
The truth: Borissov, the prosecutor’s office and NSO officials all know who took pictures in the prime minister’s bedroom. They also know that the photos look terribly like the behavior of a mafia boss and that such a plot is not possible for any ruler of a civilized country. To the truth we must add the fact that many Bulgarians believe that the Prime Minister’s explanations that the photos are manipulation, and the millions in the drawer were put by someone… Whether they really believe or are very simple, it is difficult to say.
Power: The protests demanding the resignation of Boyko Borissov, Ivan Geshev and the entire government were paid for by Vasil Bozhkov and instigated by President Rumen Radev.
The truth: There is no evidence for these claims. If there were at least one, or even half, it would have been shown in public long ago.
These examples are enough to compile a 2020 portrait.
Does it seem too gloomy? Here’s something clear from Nietzsche’s Will to Power: I know better than anyone why only man laughs. Because only he suffers so much that he had to invent laughter. The most unhappy and melancholic creature, at the same time the happiest.
Hey, suffering creatures, smile, the end is in sight, yours or ours …
However, we have an optimist of the year: a grandmother from Vratsa. He recently told a Frog News team in a report for the column “Bulgaria, how you won’t see it from the jeep”: We are dying of misery, we live on a version, but Boyche will fix us. Yes, yes, he fixes us all for years, with 200 he fixes us …
Boyche will fix us, the Bulgarian synonym for Stockholm syndrome. How not to invent laughter …
