Dangerous weather with torrential rains and wet snow in the mountains will cover most of the country in the days leading up to the New Year. Up to 40 liters per day is expected to fall in southern and eastern Bulgaria, meteorologist Petar Yankov predicted to Trud.

After the weather change on Sunday, a yellow code for stormy wind is in effect in almost all districts except four in northern Bulgaria.

“The heavy rains began on Sunday, mainly due to rain. There will be snow in places above 1200 meters, but no cover will form,” said the meteorologist. In the next few days, the clouds and the sun will alternate, and the temperatures will be 10 to 15 degrees, and in the western part of the country they will be lower, between 8 and 9 degrees.

On the afternoon of December 31 (Thursday) the clouds will be significant, it will rain a lot. There will be wet snow again in the high fields and mountains. The precipitation will occur mainly in the northwest and west of Bulgaria. “It will rain again in the east and in the central parts. And this is how we will celebrate New Year’s Eve, we will walk on water,” Yankov said, warning drivers about ice on the roads.

According to him, the whole winter is getting warmer, but on the other hand we will witness more rainfall. From the first of January there follows a longer period with more hours of sunshine. The fourth, the clouds will increase and it will rain again, and wet snow on the mountains.

We are looking forward to the true winter after the middle of the new month, when a large layer of snow will accumulate.

“There will be heavy snow in the period from January 10 to 13, when significant accumulations are expected. It will be 60-70 cm in mountain resorts, temperatures will drop to 2-7 degrees, it will be colder in the mountains”, Yankov pointed out.

There will also be rains in February and March will be cooler. As in January, more precipitation than normal is expected.

For limited visibility on the roads, the Interior Ministry alerted and warned drivers to drive carefully. The visibility of the Hemus Highway in the Vitinya Tunnel area was reduced to about 30 meters. Traffic was also problematic on sections of the Trakia Expressway on Sunday afternoon.

The Traffic Police recalls that reduced visibility forces you to drive at a slower speed, maintaining a sufficient distance and avoiding sudden maneuvers. The attraction for drivers is to be especially careful when passing through foggy sections and to move at a speed commensurate with the weather conditions.

According to the weather forecast, there will be a danger of fog on the roads in the coming days.

Problems were the sections of the road with visibility of only 15 meters in the Hemus area from km 33 to km 53, Sofia district, visibility was reduced to 30 meters in the area of ​​the Troyanski pass, Bosnia, Vizitsa, district of Burgas.
