WAITING FOR A NEW ORDER: Companies insist on ending the blockade

Businesses have reacted drastically to the idea of a longer lockdown in bars, restaurants and shopping centers. Restaurant and gym owners insist on clarity: will they open on December 21, or will restrictions continue during the holidays? With what arguments did they want to work again – tells Anna Angelova.

The streets and empty restaurants are full of people. According to the restaurant industry, this recipe to fight the coronavirus will not work. That is why they offer the end of the confinement.

“Since the closure, there has not been a decrease in the disease, on the contrary. It is the same, even sometimes it has risen. This clearly shows that restaurants are not a breeding ground for the disease,” said Pavlin Petrov, co-president of the Bulgarian Restaurant Association.

OFFICIAL: The measures in the country remain until December 21

However, restaurateurs are urging authorities to announce their decision a few days before the promised date, December 21, and not at the last minute.

“This requires first an organization on the employees, to be able to adapt. Another very important thing is the suppliers. An opening from today until today is very difficult to organize, it is almost impossible,” Petrov said.

As the restaurant owner, he said that the revenue from home deliveries during the 3-week shutdown was enough for the salaries of just four staff members. While they are on leave without pay or on the stock market, the rest of their employees are waiting for the final decision on when they will return to work and if it will be permanent. “If we open in just 3 days and close again, it will have an extremely negative effect on the business itself,” he said.

“If there is clear evidence that the crisis is beginning to subside, then a closed week or so will not change the whole picture, the celebration, the restaurants, the purchases will be transferred to the beginning of January,” said Lachezar Bogdanov, chief economist of the Institute for market economy.

The gyms have also been closed since November 27. Their owners fear that the aisles will be empty after the new year, which will be bad for the business. Petar Angelov, president of the Association for Health and Fitness, is categorical: “This ignorance and these constantly divergent signals confuse people – it must be said clearly and precisely, and not at the last minute if we will be open as the Minister – December 21 “.

If gyms, restaurants, and malls will be running before the holidays, it will be clear in a few days. However, if the lockdown continues, the closed companies are ready to take more serious measures to protect their right to work.
