One of CSKA’s iconic soccer players from the recent past, Vladimir Manchev, told an interesting story about his relationship with legend Dimitar Penev.
He attended the presentation of the autobiography of the Bulgarian specialist, entitled Strategist.
I have to tell you about my first meeting with Dimitar Penev, which took place at the Pancharevo base. Then there were no changing rooms, but bungalows. Now things have changed (laughs). They kidnapped me from Pazardzhik with a Moskvich and took me to him. I go into the bungalow and look through his glasses, which has lowered a bit.
He said, “Hi, boy. I’m Uncle Penev. You’re our boy. We’ll give you money and you’re not going anywhere.” I blinked in rags in front of him and after the first training session he called me: “You handle your left foot very well. We will give you a left wing.”
Where did this left foot see it? I couldn’t understand it. In the end it went well, because I fixed the game with my left foot. I can tell many stories about him. He always tugged on my ears when he had to. This is one of the people I will be eternally grateful to for giving me a path in great football. He also believed in many other young players, who were given a chance. He deserves the utmost respect and esteem that we can all give him. I mean, he’s a great man to me. I will always be grateful to him for what he did for me. I will always be proud to have been his competitor, ”Manchev said.
