Sebastian Vettel has rejected McLaren’s offer, according to the German media. Ferrari and the four-time world champion confirmed yesterday that they will split after the 2020 season. This afternoon, the German had talks with McLaren, as team boss Andreas Seidl strongly supported the idea of luring him to Woking.
Among Vettel’s conditions was not doing development work on the car. McLaren presented him with his plan, according to which they should return to Formula 1 victories in three years, from 2021 onwards. In this situation, Sebastian decided that he did not want to be part of the project.
According to journalists close to the German, he was looking at Mercedes and, in particular, at the place of Valteri Botas. Finn and Lewis Hamilton’s contracts are until the end of 2020. However, the permanence of English is believed to have been practically agreed. This makes Vettel’s membership very unlikely, at least because the salary costs of two multiple champions are quite serious.
McLaren would eventually take Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian himself is believed to have sought contact with the Woking team, and the deal is likely to be completed over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Renault’s tweet turned out to be among the rumors flooding Formula 1 since yesterday. The team posted a photo of Fernando Alonso from the podium in France in 2014 on his account. The Spaniard responded with a shot from the stands of the days he was driving for Renault. This has led many to wonder if sharing photos is just a joke or a hint of something else.
