Three Bulgarian tennis players received the unique opportunity to play in the super tournament of the ATP 250 Sofia Open 2020 category. Dimitar Kuzmanov, Alexander Lazarov and Adrian Andreev will participate with a “wild card” in the main draw of the fifth edition of the tournament in Sofia on 7 to November 14 at “Arena Armeec”.
Thanks to the organization of Bulgaria in a world tour tournament, the best Bulgarian tennis players have the opportunity to participate directly in the competition with the stars of the world tennis elite.
Bulgaria’s second racket, Dimitar Kuzmanov, will play for the fifth time with a “wild card” at the Sofia Open. Earlier this year, the 27-year-old from Plovdiv became the country’s record holder for Davis Cup victories, and will now be seeking his first ATP 250 series tournament victory.
Alexander Lazarov impressed the Bulgarian public a year ago when he overcame the tie with victories over placed Lukash Lacko and Luka Vani to reach a main draw match against one of his sons’ idols Fernando Verdasco. This will be the 22-year-old Lazarov’s fifth appearance at the ATP tournament in Sofia and his third main draw appearance after the “wild card” in 2017 and going through projections in 2019.
19-year-old Adrian Andreev has the opportunity to play in the main draw for the third year, after in 2017, at just 15 years old, he participated in the playoffs in Sofia. In 2018, Andreev became the first player born in this century to play a main draw match in a tournament on the ATP calendar, thanks to the Bulgarian Tennis Federation and the organizers of the Sofia Open.
On the eve of the tournament, the organizers of the Sofia Open 2020 were informed by Grigor Dimitrov’s team that due to an injury he will not be able to take advantage of the “wild card” reserved for him to participate in the home tournament. We express our regret for the absence of the best Bulgarian tennis player and wish him a speedy recovery.
A fourth Bulgarian will participate in the individual competition after Gabriel Donev received a “wild card” for qualification. Jonas Forejtek, one of the future great talents of the Czech Republic, winner of two junior Grand Slam titles in 2019, in the Wimbledon single and the US Open doubles, will also participate in the screenings in Sofia.
Bulgaria also received two “wild cards” for the doubles tournament at the 2020 Sofia Open. Dimitar Kuzmanov will partner with Alexander Donski and Alexander Lazarov, with Vasil Mladenov.
