Manchester United have achieved their first home victory of the season after beating West Bromwich Albion 1-0 in a match on matchday nine of the English Premier League, played at Old Trafford Stadium.
The only goal of the match was scored by Bruno Fernandes (56 ‘), who hit a penalty, which, however, had to be over-served, because the initial shot was stopped by goalkeeper Sam Johnston, who had gone out in front of the goal.
Otherwise, the infamous referee in England David Kut became famous again. Kutt’s name was revealed during the derby between Everton and Liverpool in mid-October. Shortly before the penalty for the Red Devils, Kut had awarded an 11-meter penalty to the UBA, but decided to cancel it after the VAR room advised him to reconsider Fernandes’ foul against Conor Gallagher.
Otherwise, the match started without situations, as both teams failed to impose their game and reach the gates of David De Gea and Sam Johnston. Thus, the first half ended goalless.
In the second part, things changed. In the first seconds of the second half, the guests reached a good scoring situation, in which Bruno Fernandes was awkward and kicked Conor Gallagher, and the referee pointed to the white spot. After reviewing the VAR situation, David Coote’s assistants could not decide whether there was a sanction or not, and he had to investigate the situation himself. After seeing the situation, Kut changed his mind and canceled the penalty, most likely because Fernandes touched the ball, although he openly kicked his opponent.
In the 53rd minute, the home team also scored a penalty, after a cross from the left, Semi Ajay played with his hand, although the player did not look at the ball as he passed. Bruno Fernandes took responsibility, but Sam Johnston saved. However, Kutt’s assistants pointed out that the visiting goalkeeper had left the goal line before Fernandes fired, which meant only one thing: a new penalty. On the second attempt, the United midfielder made no mistake, scoring 1: 0.
In the 65th minute the UBA came very close to the equalizer, but Callum Robinson’s shot sent the ball hitting the crossbar.
In the end, United still managed to record the first victory at home and the second in a row in the championship. Manchester are already in the first half of the league standings and are in ninth place with an asset of 13 points. The UBA is in the relegation zone – 18th position with 3 points.
