British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will announce next week a ban on the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars from 2030, five years ahead of previous plans, the Financial Times reported today, cited by Reuters.
Britain planned to ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars from 2040 as part of efforts to reduce greenhouse gases, and in February Johnson set a new deadline: 2035.
Citing unidentified industry and government sources, the Financial Times writes that Johnson now intends to set an even earlier date, 2030, in a speech on the country’s environmental policy, which he will rule next week.
The BBC also announced such a plan today.
A Downing Street spokesman declined to comment.
The Financial Times says the new schedule will not affect some hybrid cars and will be available until 2035.
According to industry data, oil and diesel cars account for 73.6 percent of new car sales this year, and only 5.5 percent of sales are of electric cars, which are typically more expensive. The rest of the sales fall on hybrid cars. / BTA
