The faces of Ugur Shahin and Yozlem Tureci appeared in the latest episode of “Abyss” in gratitude for their discovery.
“You have become a hope to the world. We are proud of you as scientists!” This inscription and the painted faces of the two scientists who created the Pfeiser-Bayontech coronavirus vaccine appeared in an episode of the popular series of Turkish television Abyss. It aired on Monday night on one of the most watched channels in Turkey, TV Show. Thus, both the film crew and television expressed their gratitude and appreciation to Ugur Shahin and Yozlem Tureci.
The two scientists are actually of Turkish descent, although they have spent their entire conscious lives in Germany.
Professor Sahin was born in Turkey. He was very young when he went with his mother to Cologne, where his father already worked for a large car company. Sahin studied medicine at the University of Cologne and worked in a laboratory as a student.
He defended his doctorate in 1992 and began practicing as a physician in internal medicine and oncology. He then worked at the Saarland University Clinic, where he met his wife, Ozlem Tureci.
She is also the daughter of Turkish emigrants. His father was a doctor in Istanbul, but he moved to Germany. He works as a surgeon at Lastrup Catholic Hospital, and his daughter is still fascinated by his profession and cannot imagine doing anything different. Yozlem Tureci describes herself as a “Prussian Turk.”
She and her husband were married in 2002. They say that shortly after the ceremony they went to the laboratory and returned to work.
Their efforts to create a weapon against COVID-19 have so shocked the world that two weeks ago, Ugur Sahin and Ozlem Tyureci were named personalities of the year by the prestigious Financial Times. Last month, the President of the Turkish National Assembly, Mustafa Sentop, congratulated the creators of the vaccine and said that he had spoken with them and congratulated them on their great success.
Now the Turkish film industry has paid tribute to scientists with the series “Abyss”. The inscription and graffiti with the faces of Ugur Shahin and Yozlem Tureci were shown in episode 17 of the fourth season of the crime drama, which is enjoying great audience interest in our southern neighbor. It also won the award for the best police series in Turkey in 2018.
