US Open, third round
Tsvetana Pironkova – Dona Vekic
Tsvetana Pironkova faces 24th in the world Dona Vekic in one of the most anticipated matches on today’s schedule of the women’s tournament at the US Open. The Bulgarian has not lost a single set since the beginning of the tournament and will surely want to continue this positive trend.
From the start of the tournament Pironkova defeated first over 120 in the world Lyudmila Samsonova (6-2, 6-3), then presented the sensation of the tournament thus far, beating the two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza (7 -5, 6- 3).
For his part, Vekic was not far from being eliminated in the first round, but managed to come back against Kristina Plishkova (3-6, 7-6, 6-4), and then easily passed by Patricia Tig (6-2, 6- one).
The statistics before the game are completely on Pironkova’s side. She and Vekic have met on the court three times, and all three matches ended in a “pure” victory for the Plovdiv resident. What’s even more encouraging for Pironkova is that all three matches were played on hard courts and two of them took place in the US, at the Indian Wells and San Antonio tournaments.
Live Commentary
0-1 – The match started badly for Pironkova and Vekic won the game to zero. It is noteworthy that the Bulgarian’s left thigh is bandaged and this justifies the injury fears that the Plovdiv woman received in the match against Garbine Mugurusa.
1-1 – Great answer to Pironkova. The Bulgarian returned the gesture to her opponent and responded with a game to nil.
1-2 – Vekic proved that his strategy would be to get Pironkova to move as much as possible on the court and thus take advantage of his opponent’s injury. The Bulgarian showed great defense, but in several situations she had no chances.
2-2 – Vekic attacked aggressively again, but Pironkova waited patiently for her moments and with several excellent winners managed to reach a new draw in the games.
2-3 – The Croatian’s aggressive attacks this time achieved the desired effect and she went ahead for the third time, registering a new game to zero.
3-3 – Pironkova again did not allow Vekic to break down in the result and reached a new tie after a very smart and reasonable game.
