The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced the nomination of Conservative Justice Amy Connie Barrett as a member of the Supreme Court.
“This is my third nomination (for a member of the Supreme Court) and this is a great moment,” he said on the White House lawn, world agencies reported, cited by BTA.
“Tonight I have the honor of nominating one of the brightest and most talented lawyers in the country as a member of the Supreme Court. You will be fantastic,” Trump added, addressing the judge beside him.
At just 48 years old, Barrett would become one of the youngest members of the Supreme Court. Justices of the United States Supreme Court receive a life sentence.
The president “could not have made a better decision,” said the Republican leader. He added that he hopes to meet with the nominated judge next week.
Barrett is expected to replace the late Liberal Judge Ruth Ginsbergwho died of cancer on September 18. An enthusiastic Catholic, Barrett’s candidacy was welcomed by religious conservatives and other right-wing forces. However, liberals believe that their legal opinions are too influenced by their religious beliefs and fear that, if passed, the right to abortion may be restricted, the AP notes.
Barrett will be the first mother of school-age childrenwho serves on the United States Supreme Court, Trump noted. The 48-year-old judge has seven children, including two who were adopted by Haiti. She could become the fifth woman approved as a member of the United States Supreme Court.

Trump announced that he expects the procedure to approve the nomination to begin on October 12.

The Senate will vote on Amy Barrett’s candidacy for the Supreme Court in the coming weeks, said Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of the upper house of Congress, quoted by the Associated Press.
