“Serbia and Kosovo are committed to economic normalization,” Trump said, adding: “By focusing on job creation and economic growth, the two countries have made great progress.”

The announcement came after two days of high-level talks between the two leaders and Trump’s top advisers, followed by last month’s historic deal between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to normalize relations.
Kosovo, where the majority is Albanian, declared its independence from Serbia in 2008 following NATO-led bombings to stop ethnic warfare. Serbia, backed by its great Slavic and Orthodox Christian ally Russia, does not recognize Kosovo’s independence, a prerequisite for Belgrade’s future membership in the European Union.
US National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien, who was involved in the talks between Serbia and Kosovo, said the agreement to expand economic ties can pave the way for political decisions in the future.

A senior EU official said on Monday that the EU-sponsored talks, which failed in 2018 but resumed in July, could lead to an agreement between Serbia and Kosovo in a few months.
Previously, the U.S. talks were scheduled for June but were delayed after Kosovo President Hashim Thaci has been charged with alleged war crimes during the guerrilla uprising in 1998-1999 against the Serbian government and beyond. He denied the accusations.
