Legendary Olympic and World Handball Champion Zlatko Saracevic has died at a traffic light in the city of Koprivnica. She had a heart attack in her car just hours after claiming a major derby victory in the Croatian women’s championship.
Saracevic led Podravka (Koprivnica) to success in the derby with Lokomotiva (Zagreb), which secured his team’s participation in the Handball Champions League. After the game, the 60-year-old specialist got into his car to take goalkeeping coach Barbara Stanchin away.
While waiting for the red light, Zlatko Saracevic fell ill and collapsed. Stanchin called an ambulance, but the team that arrived only found the handball celebrity dead.
Saracevic is one of the great handball legends of the former Yugoslavia. With the Yugoslav national team, he was world champion in 1986 and bronze medalist at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He then played for Croatia and with the country’s representative team became Olympic champion in Atlanta in 1996, and also won silver in the 1995 World Cup and a bronze medal at the 1994 European Championship.
