Tragedy and heroism when rescuing tourists in the Balkans

A tourist died after slipping in the Zhaltets peak area in the Balkans and fell on the slope heading south about 300 meters, his death was established shortly after. This was announced by the Mountain Rescue Service.

The Lovech and Troyan rescue services managed to locate and find the groups and there are already people with them. The Mountain Rescue Service told BNT that the action is complicated, the transport of tourists has not yet been organized.

“People have not yet been transported because the slope is icy and at least 30 rescuers are needed to help the victims,” Apriltsi Municipality Mayor Tihomir Kukenski told BNT.

The latest information I have is from the Pleven cabin cabin. At 3 in the afternoon I was also in the cabin and we watched with binoculars and binoculars how four people fell into the gutter. We immediately alert the Rescue Service. Three of the four that fell today, you have to lower them with a stretcher and the fourth will lower, “said Kukensky.
According to him, yesterday there was also a similar case in which a person flew down the slope. This morning around 11 o’clock there was another incident in which a man skidded about 500 meters and failed only due to abrasions.

The reason, according to the mayor of Apriltsi, is due to the formation of ice on the slopes of the mountains and when people are without equipment and training, such incidents occur.

On January 1, 2021, two rescuers from the Bulgarian Red Cross Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) detachment in Troyan, transitioning on the cable from the “Kupata” peak in the direction of the “Botev” peak, responded to a sign for a tourist who fell during going the same way. He immediately received first aid and was escorted to the parking lot in the Mazaneto area, from where he was transferred to a hospital. This was announced by PSS

Around noon on January 2, the PSS 24 Hour Central Post (CDP) received a signal for a tourist injured in a fall in the Mlechniya Chal peak area. Three mountain rescuers from the area approached the victim, gave him first aid and escorted him to the parking lot.

Meanwhile, again through the CDP, a signal is received from a young woman who explains that her boyfriend has fallen down a gutter. The accident reoccurred along the cable run. A mountain rescuer from the Kalofer detachment, currently in the area, saw the girl and immediately began searching for the victim. He established his location, gave him first aid and escorted him to safety.

As he helps the two of them move down the road, he notices that two other tourists moving nearby suddenly disappear from his sight. He returns and discovers that one of them has fallen into a gutter. The second, in an attempt to help him, fell after him. The rescuer also gave them first aid, took measures to insulate them from the cold and began to take them one by one to the summer trail to Botev Peak. The group organized for transportation in the first case was redirected to the cable car. A second group of mountain rescuers was organized, joined by colleagues from the Lovech detachment. Subsequently, a third group set out to intercept and help transport the victims.

At the moment, the three victims are being transferred to a medical institution, announced the PSS.

At approximately the same time in the afternoon, two tourists traveling from the Botev shelter to the Dobrila shelter suffered an accident. One slipped in the Zhaltets peak area and fell down the slope heading south for about 300 m, his death was established shortly thereafter. Mountain rescuers are about to arrive and organize your transport.

The reason for all the accidents is again an underestimation of the conditions in the winter mountains and more precisely the snow conditions, as well as the lack of appropriate equipment. The victims were without cats or used tourist cats that were not suitable for the conditions at the time.
