Days before the introduction of the new strict measures against the spread of the coronavirus, BNT presented the reaction of the business.

In the context of widespread dissatisfaction and fears of big losses, much of the companies are still happy that there is finally justice in the measures and the exceptions to the closure will be much smaller.

“There was a stimulus of unfair competition and in December, which was the most important thing for retailers, some closed and others took over the flow of people,” said Manol Goygadzhiev, president of the Bulgarian Association of Retail Centers.

However, a third closure would be catastrophic, especially for retailers whose collections are seasonal, the industry said. The Shopping Center Association expects the industry to receive support from the state, different from current measures. Most of the large shopping centers could not apply for them because they are aimed at small and medium-sized businesses.

They offer closure of shopping centers, restaurants, schools, kindergartens and gyms in Sofia

“Whether it is tax relief, construction tax, garbage tax during the closing period. I’ll give an example, in Greece, the state covered owners 80% of the rents during the closing period,” Goygadzhiev added.

Similar business support measures have also been proposed in Romania and the Czech Republic.

A strong reaction of discontent from large non-food retail chains outside of shopping malls, although they will now close for the first time.

For them, the new measures were a complete surprise and without any prior consultation. They were declared unsuitable and harmful to human life and health because they would cause crowds in the small shops.

“As we can see from the order, the small stores will be privileged, without any explanation. Why a 300 square meter store will work and 301 will not work. What will happen if large stores enclose a part of 300 square meters and allow consumers to buy only there, “added Yordan Mateev, president of the Association of Retail Chains.

This time, along with the huge financial losses, the restaurateurs’ concern is that the staff is totally unmotivated and many people are looking for ways to recycle. They also demanded greater efficiency on the part of the State in the payment of benefits.

“The money for January came to us in March. For some it may not be a problem, but for people who no longer have savings and five days is a lot,” added restaurant owner Yassen Angelov.

They also ask why they pay a garbage fee for a whole year, given that they have worked half the time. Hoteliers are also unhappy with the new measures.

“I consider that the new measure is incorrect because the food in the rooms is unsanitary and because working part time, but still working, deprives us of the right to state aid,” added Malin Bistrin, a hotel owner.

The fear of everyone in the industry is that the 10-day deadline is unlikely to be met.
