Thousands of protests in Belarus against the government of former President Alexander Lukashenko. Citizens of the country marched through the streets again, despite warnings from security services that the protesters would be detained if they did not obey the order to stay home. However, thousands of protesters disobeyed and took to the streets of the capital Minsk, waving the Belarusian flag and chanting “Long live Belarus”.
According to local media, the streets are blocked and armored vehicles are located. The country’s Interior Ministry said it was ready to send more law enforcement officers to the scene.
The ministry warned people not to participate in a protest called by the opposition “March of Unity” in Independence Square in Minsk. However, this did not stop the discontents from taking to the streets again to demand the resignation of Lukashenko, the release of political prisoners and new elections. They also spoke out against police violence.
So far, Lukashenko has avoided any dialogue with the opposition. He claims to have won the August 9 elections by more than 80%.
