Thousands of stores will reopen in Austria, which will become one of the first European countries to ease stringent restrictions imposed by the new coronavirus, Reuters reported.
However, the Austrian government has warned citizens that the danger has not yet passed, BTA reported.
Austria took action from the beginning, closing schools, establishments, theaters and shops that did not sell essential items about four weeks ago. People were urged to stay home and work from home if they could.
So far, Austria has coped relatively well with the epidemic, with 368 deaths out of more than 14,000 reported, especially relative to some of the major European countries like Italy, Spain and France. New confirmed cases increased by several percent and the number of hospitalizations is stabilizing, Reuters says.
“We want to get out of this crisis as quickly and financially as possible and fight for every job in Austria,” said Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurtz, whose conservative party, in an open letter to his compatriots on Saturday, on the eve of Catholic Easter. He leads a coalition with the Greens.
Last week, Kurtz outlined a plan to remove the restrictions: first, stores up to 400 meters in size will reopen today, as well as home and garden improvements; Thereafter, shopping malls, larger stores, and beauty salons will resume work from May 1; Restaurants and hotels may open in the middle of next month.
There will be restrictions on the maximum number of people that can be in the respective store at the same time, and all customers must wear a mask.
On Friday, the World Health Organization warned, without explicitly mentioning Austria, that lifting the restrictions could lead to a deadly new wave of the epidemic, Reuters noted.
