The United States calls on Sofia and Skopje to resolve open bilateral disputes outside of the accession process to achieve the common goal of North Macedonia’s membership in the EU, the State Department press service was quoted as saying by Vecer newspaper.
The US State Department recalls that the United States and Bulgaria are strong supporters of the Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkans, the FOCUS news agency reported. “We welcome the goodwill for negotiations. We call on Bulgaria and North Macedonia to resolve existing bilateral problems outside the accession process to achieve the common goal: North Macedonia’s membership in the EU.” the State Department told MIA.
The United States is very clear in its desire for North Macedonia, which is currently a candidate for membership, to enter the next phase of the process, which is to hold the first intergovernmental conference at the end of the year, Macedonian media noted.
“The enlargement process promotes lasting peace, stability and prosperity throughout the region.” The EU’s decision to open accession talks with North Macedonia and Albania in March was a positive step and served to overcome the misleading accusations that the transatlantic community is leaving the Balkans behind, “the State Department said in a statement. The department notes that any delay in the accession of these countries to the EU runs the risk of raising the problem of the EU’s confidence in the region.
