In the last month, the names of the mythical Galevi brothers have been constantly mentioned in Dupnitsa, after the head of security, Vasil Kaplanov – Kaplata, was suspected in the disappearance of Yanek Milanov. However, the locals do it in silence, because 8 years after their escape from Bulgaria, fear still reigns in the city, writes “Trud”.
Plamen Galev and Angel Hristov are not blood brothers, but they have been inseparable from the moment they served in the Interior Ministry’s Special Counter-Terrorism Detachment. According to their former companions, they were excellent berets. In the 90s they began to earn extra money guarding discos. They graduated from higher education and transferred to work at the NSCOC.
At that time, many of the anti-mafia members were closely related to power groups, Plamen and Angel were not far behind. However, they want to be independent players. And they do it. They both know that it will be difficult to beat the Sofia mutras and that is why they decide to become №1, but … in Dupnitsa.
Why they choose this city is a mystery. Angel was born in Sandanski and Plamen, in Kardzhali. Their strength is that they don’t trust anyone other than others. They even stay away from the old berets and together they plan their whole “business”, with Plamen as the protagonist. They are beginning to take over business in the area.
From the beginning, they took the fear not only from the people of Dupnitsa and Resilovo, but also from the neighboring village of Bistritsa, the birthplace of Ivo Karamanski’s father. In the 1990s, the brothers owned bakeries and anyone who dared to work on their own was brutally crushed. The people of Bistrita say that to stop the local baker from his business, the two of them put him in the oven for a while. The shocked man immediately decided that he would make a living in another way.
Their names are associated with the production of amphetamines, but so far no one has been able to prove it. According to police, Galevi is policing the lucrative synthetic drug business while being anti-mafia. It was they who saved for many years one of the main organizers of the illegal drug workshop in Opitsvet – Kristian Mladenov.
As employees of the NSCOC, the brothers worked against drug trafficking. On December 19, 1997, the Ministry of the Interior attacked the amphetamine production laboratory. Then-chief prosecutor Ivan Tatarchev accused the officers of acting unprofessionally and legally illiterate.
In drugstores there were only raw materials that can be defined as highly intoxicating substances. Its unregulated production and sale is considered a crime, but the punishment for it is ridiculously small.
There was no SRS in the case. Thus, the investigators found themselves tied up, the result of the action was deplorable. Shortly after the operation, Galevi started his own amphetamine production business and took over the market and export channels, police said.
Many times the Ministry of the Interior tried to collect information on this, but never succeeded. The brothers’ business was successful and they built their farm in Resilovo.
It is built like a concrete and iron bunker, but in addition to the visible part, there is also a hidden one. Beneath the buildings and the courtyard are huge rooms and tunnels that lead miles to Resilovo. His guards were well armed and the security measures were stronger than those of the first men in the country. On the way to the mansion all the bushes and trees were cut down so that the killer could not hide.
A neighbor was ordered to move his patio door to the other side. He refuses, and when he wakes up the next morning, the door is bricked up, a new one is built on the next street. However, they are not sure, the police are sniffing at them. And they decide they need immunity. The reason is that in 2009 they were arrested for organized crime.
Half a year later, they registered as majority candidates for deputies and left the cell. Plamen ranked second in the Kyustendil constituency, ahead of rival BSP. Angel Hristov’s result of the Pernik vote is more modest, but also impressive. Three years later, however, they were still sentenced – Plamen to 5 years and Angel – to 4 years in prison.
Hours after the Supreme Court of Cassation confirmed the sentences, the two are now out of the country. Angel Hristov sold his favorite car “Porsche Carrera” a week earlier for 200,000 BGN.
More than a month before the sentences, the brothers “relocated” their business. To save their millions and companies, they registered them in the Seychelles and transferred their money to MPV Trading Limited and PGA Nord Adams Limited. Angel Hristov’s wife has a third offshore company.
The brothers were furious at the sentences and vowed to avenge anyone found guilty of it. They have left in Bulgaria loyal people who not only run their businesses, but are also ready to kill, say the inhabitants of Dupnitsa, who still tremble at the mention of Galevi. Your concerns are not unfounded.
In 2012, the car of journalist Lydia Pavlova’s son, who was one of the key witnesses against the brothers, caught fire. The conflict began in 2008 when the son was beaten by his bodyguard, Georgi Gradevski-Konna, at a local restaurant. Pavlova filed a complaint with the police, followed by threats from Angel Galev and Plamen Hristov to withdraw it.
The brothers warned that they would ensure that Ivan, then 18, earned a reputation as a drug addict. In early 2010, Pavlova’s son was hit in a New Year’s bar and his car woke up with flat tires and a scratched coupe. Another threatened witness was the owner of a taxi company, Plamen Milanov from Dupnitsa.
He confronted Galevi after he was pressured to transfer his company to them. The man did not even attend his daughter’s wedding for fear that innocents could suffer if the Galevi decided to take revenge on him that day.
One of the former mayors of Dupnitsa, Plamen Sokolov, was also threatened. In June 1999, a bomb exploded in the courtyard of his house. The explosion was preceded by more than 207 phone calls from anonymous voices.
“They told me they would kill my son and throw his body in the river. Due to the harassment, I was forced to change my number. I also filed a complaint with the Dupnitsa District Prosecutor’s Office and the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior. However As I left the institutions, Angel Hristov and Plamen Galev were standing in the Audi near the barrier, glaring at me.
Shortly afterwards, a bomb exploded in my house, “admits Sokolov, a doctor by profession. He said he had treated Galevi and his men who had been shot and beaten, but were afraid to file complaints.
