The restrictive measures and the partial closure due to the coronavirus should be extended at least a week after the New Year, suggested the head of the National Health Insurance Fund, Professor Petko Salchev, during a briefing of the Ministry of Health with the participation of the Bulgarian Medical Union.

According to him, this is necessary because immediately after the New Year holidays a series of named days begins.

“My professional opinion is at least a week after the New Year holidays, because then they coincide with other holidays, not to overload the system,” said Professor Salchev.

On January 1, Bulgarians celebrate Saint Basil’s Day, January 6 is Jordan Day, and on January 7, half of Bulgaria celebrates Saint John’s Day. The concern is that there is a high risk of gathering many celebrants and spreading the infection.

Health Minister Kostadin Angelov did not comment on the idea, but promised that decisions to ease the measures will be taken with reason, not emotion, as well as listening entirely to the opinion of the experts.

According to the president of the BMA, Dr. Ivan Madjarov, for the moment it is risky to loosen the restrictive measures, because the avalanche will flood the hospitals again. “Preliminary estimates of how long and how many people are infected are inappropriate in the situation, because the year has shown that they are not valid,” he said.

“I think it is clear to all of us that we really need to keep up with the filling of hospital beds, especially in intensive care units,” said Dr. Madjarov.
