The former president of the Bulgarian Football Union, Valentin Mihov, was attacked and beaten in Sofia last night, bTV has learned.
The incident occurred in the Mladost neighborhood around 1:00 am. Mihov said he was attacked in front of his apartment building by more than two people. They were masked. They beat him with their hands and a crowbar, he said.
Mihov, 66, is currently in the Military Medical Academy without danger of death. There is a fracture of one of the fingers.
He described the attack as a “football warning before the next BFU congress.” Elections for a new plant president are scheduled for December 11. Then a successor to Borislav Mihailov resigned at the end of 2019 will be elected.
The perpetrators of the beating are wanted by the police.
Valentin Mihov is one of the iconic figures of Bulgarian football for the past 30 years. He was president of the Bulgarian Football Union between 1993 and 1994. During his tenure, the national team qualified for the World Cup in the United States and reached fourth place.
Mihov was president of CSKA between 1991 and 1993. Later, the team became Champion of Bulgaria (1992) and winner of the National Cup (1993).
He held the position of President of the Bulgarian Professional Football League (1991-1993 and 1996-2010). From 2007 to 2011 he was a member of the board of directors of the European Professional Football League.
Since February 2018 he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Bulgarian Football Union.
Valentin Mihov received the highest state award in 2010 – the Order of Stara Planina, for his outstanding contribution in the field of physical education and sports.
