“These levels here will become the Seventh Reactor,” Boyko Borissov said today while surveying the field next to the Kozloduy nuclear power plant. He was on “inspection” with the Minister of Finance Kiril Ananiev, the Minister of Energy Temenujka Petkova and the leaders of LC “Apoyo” and CITUB Dimitar Manolov and Plamen Dimitrov. Dnevnik selected reactions from social media without claiming to be exhaustive.
Vladislav Panev, co-chair of the Green Movement:
Two years ago, I suggested that if Borissov believes so much that a new nuclear power can be profitable, he would put shares in the project on the stock exchanges. Or do an ICO: issue Belenecoin or Sedmiblockcoin. If it is such a scam, investors will commit suicide. Pension funds and them. And here are your pensions of at least 1000 leva.
However, all estimates show that the new nuclear power cannot pay off and is a huge boost. They were not neighboring countries that would buy a share. They were not Chinese. In the end, nothing. Just depleting the state budget and bankrupt energy. In the service of this or that, it doesn’t matter. Only not in favor of Bulgaria.
Energy needs more market. It is not up to the state to determine who will work until when. And consumers. If they buy electricity from plant X at a price sufficient for its maintenance, everything is fine. And vice versa. The other is that some “smart” people lie to society while raising millions.
Oh yeah. If you have a different technology then we will not use the reactors we have already purchased. Therefore, we will spend money on new ones, which is not surprising that they are never put into operation. Because the account does not come out. Enough to please these as well as those. Excellent!
It’s about time we stopped tackling projects that cost us billions as fans. And let’s do the invoice: is it profitable or not? This is the truth.
Elenko Bozhkov, former member of the energy regulator:
A seventh reactor cannot be inspected because no such reactor exists. In my opinion, Borissov’s trip to Kozloduy is a superficial tactical move for the Americans, because Borisov is planning an investment in American nuclear technology for the future seventh unit at Kozloduy. It is very likely that there will be a government decision to initiate a procedure for the upcoming construction of a nuclear unit in the Kozloduy territory.
In principle, it will be another “smoke” for the Americans, like the helicopter inspections of the delayed Turkish flow, which are “smoke” for the Russians.
PS On February 21, 2020, the President of the NRA issued Order AA 04 30 for the approval of site 2 east of Units 1 and 2 towards the town of Harlets – 55 hectares. The video of Borissov’s visit today shows that he does not consider this site approved at all. Laughter falls …
Julian Popov, former Minister of Ecology:
Any conversation about new nuclear facilities in Bulgaria must first go through a clear, final and irreversible liquidation of Belene. Opening a new conversation about nuclear energy without closing the Belene case is frivolous and irresponsible.
Bogomil Manchev, President of the Bulgarian Atomic Forum, on BNR:
A procedure for Block Seven will take a long time, at least 10 years, if it starts today. This unit must go its own technological path. And the next three governments must have the same mindset to reach someone who is excavating a site for Block Seven.
A technology option must be found, from which an environmental impact assessment report must be prepared. The technology must be licensed. We need to understand how we will make the block, with what money.
If the procedure at the Belene nuclear power plant continues and the licensing process for some of Unit 7’s technology is still underway … there must be logic. Sometimes politics is reckless because energy, if not properly balanced or regulated, can cause enormous damage.
