According to initial information, the man is 20 years old and has a criminal record. It is said that he announced his intention to carry out the attack on the Internet. Austrian media report that he has Albanian roots and that his parents are from North Macedonia.
According to Interior Minister Karl Nehammer, the attacker was surrounded by explosives and armed with a machine gun, a pistol and a machete. The minister stressed that the attacker killed by the Rapid Reaction Services (WEGA) was undoubtedly a supporter of the radical Islamist terrorist group.
On April 25, 2019, he was sentenced to 22 months in prison for trying to go to Syria to join ISIL. On December 5, he was released on parole.
