The leader of the Volia party and vice president of the 44th National Assembly, Veselin Mareshki, received a conviction from the Varna Court of Appeal.
Mareshki was fully acquitted in the first instance by the Varna District Court, but the next instance ruled that he must serve four years in prison.
His accomplice, Krassimira Koleva, was sentenced to three and a half years for the same charge.
It is related to a scandalous situation in a pizzeria on Studentska Street in Varna, whose tenants had complained of organized crime and extortion by Mareshki and Koleva.
The sentence is not final and will be appealed. The next court is the Supreme Court of Cassation, and the sense of overwork from the court panel in this case is quite palpable.
We have yet to find out whether our judiciary does not demonstratively invade Veselin Mareshki to demonstrate its independence from the ruling party, which is subject to serious public doubts.
