The UK has the highest COVID-19 death rate in the world – the EU

Despite a severe and prolonged lockdown, the UK already has the highest COVID-19 death rate in the world, according to the latest figures.

An average of 935 deaths a day in the UK in the last week equates to more than 16 people dying from COVID-19 per million a day, writes The Independent. Data collected by the Oxford-based research platform Our World in Data shows that the UK is ahead of any other country in terms of mortality per capita in the world.

Britain has overtaken the Czech Republic in first place since January 11 after the government announced the latest coronavirus deaths on Sunday night. Another 671 deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday raised the total number of confirmed deaths from the virus in the UK to 89,261. Mexico around the world, all with a much larger population.

The UK has 3.4 million confirmed infections, which is equivalent to one in 20 people. Max Rosser, a researcher at the University of Oxford and founder of Our World in Data, said that other countries had taken faster and more decisive action in the early stages of the pandemic.

“The last Covid death in New Zealand was in mid-September,” he wrote on Twitter.

Mortality in the UK is now higher than during the first big wave of COVID-19 infections in April, when it peaked at 13 per million people a day. Recent government figures also reveal that the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 is much higher than the first peak, suggesting that the number of new daily deaths will continue to rise. During a press conference in Downing Street on Friday, medical officer Chris Whitty said the number of hospitalizations and deaths is expected to continue to rise, at least in the short term, Focus reports.

“I’m afraid we are expecting the number of people in the National Health System next week, and the number of deaths will continue until the effects of what we are all doing begin to manifest themselves,” said Professor Whitty.

“I am afraid that the peak of deaths is imminent, the peak of hospitalizations in some parts of the country has already reached the top and is slowly beginning to decline. Because people adhere to the guidelines so well, we think the peaks will come next week in 10 days for most places in terms of new hospital admissions, “the scientist said.
