The Toyota Yaris has finally become a crossover.

Japanese concern has declassified the car, which has to play in a very hot segment. The name of the new compact crossover has yet to be officially announced (if we believe the photos, it will be called Yaris Cross), but the company has already shared some technical details. It was learned, for example, that an elevated Yaris would acquire a hybrid power path. It is built on the model of those already used in Toyota C-HR and RAV4, but the unit will be responsible for a more compact gasoline engine.

The 1.5-liter Atkinson 3-stroke engine is optimized for thermal efficiency: according to the developers, its efficiency is better by 40%, which is considered an excellent result. The declared total power of the tract is 116 hp. The innovation will also feature a four-wheel drive system, which is somewhat unusual for such a car class. As part of the AWD system, this SUV is front-wheel drive, and the rear-wheel drive only activates the rear if necessary for additional acceleration or when driving on unstable surfaces.

The Toyota Yaris has finally become a crossover.

The electrical component of the system is also claimed to weigh less than its mechanical counterparts, saving even more fuel. The crossover is built on the same TNGA-B platform as the five-door Yaris, but it turns out to be slightly larger. It does not reach the length of the highest position C-HR by approximately 20 cm, but it exceeds the length of the Yaris by 240 mm, 60 of which are from the front overhang and 180 from the rear.

Otherwise, the wheelbase of the innovation is identical to that of the Yaris gauges and amounts to 2,560mm, but 30mm is added to the ground clearance. Toyota claims to have been able to build an almost optimal small crossover for the city: compact on the outside, spacious on the inside and agile. For example, the functionality of the new Yaris Cross will be responsible for a well-developed trunk organizer and the ability to fold the rear of the rear sofa in 40:20:40 proportions, which Toyota considers almost a revolution in the segment.

The Toyota Yaris has finally become a crossover.

Designed by stylists from Toyota’s Japanese and European studios, Yaris Cross’s design focuses primarily on the European buyer. The head of the group’s French-style center, Lance Scott, noted that in this segment, the car to buy is chosen primarily through the eyes, and therefore requires a bright appearance. However, buyers appreciate the high level of practicality. And these two fundamentally incompatible factors, he said, have tried to match Toyota designers.

In the process, designers and designers have consulted with potential clients, trying to determine their real needs and preferences. Toyota plans to build a Yaris Cross at its factory in the French city of Valenciennes, and the company’s plans are very ambitious: up to 150,000 vehicles a year for the European market alone. However, it is true that not only are the approximate prices not indicated, but the approximate date of the appearance of the crossover for sale is also not known.
