Professor Mihailov was for a long time director of the Institute of Sociology during the socialist period, and from 1976 to 1988 he was a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Bulgaria. He is a deputy of the Seventh Great National Assembly. After the removal of Todor Zhivkov, he briefly became Georgi Atanasov’s deputy prime minister in 1989.

He has been a professor at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences since 1970, a professor and lecturer at the University of Sofia since 1971 and a corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences since 1984. Since 1973 he has headed the Department of Propaganda and Agitation in the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Bulgaria. He has worked at the Institute of Sociology since its foundation in 1968 as head of the Department of General Sociology and later director.
