Part of the false ceiling of one of the busiest subways in Varna collapsed this morning. This was reported by Radio Varna. According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at a time when, like every morning at that time, groups of students from the nearby high school for mathematics and the Zahari Stoyanov school were passing through the subway. The metro leads to one of the most visited attractions in Varna – the Dolphinarium.
Today, in front of “Radio Varna” (BNR), the deputy mayor of the city, Hristo Ivanov, in whose department the construction and infrastructure projects of the local administration are located, could not remember exactly when the repair of the metro was carried out , although it happened after he took office in 2013.
An inspection by Dnevnik showed that the metro was repaired in 2015 by the Hydrostroy company, which has been carrying out almost all construction and repair work in Varna related to the city’s infrastructure for years.
The suspended ceiling of the metro was repaired in 2015 as part of a government-funded project. It included major repairs on Knyaz Boris I Blvd. in the section from Tsar Osvoboditel Blvd. to Pochivka Blvd., as well as the renovation of all adjacent subways, including the one that collapsed today.
According to the information released by the municipal website Live Varna on September 4, 2015, nine meters and an overpass on Knyaz Boris I Blvd. Again, according to official information, all of them were “prepared in advance for repair by installing waterproofing even earlier of the asphalting and rehabilitation of the boulevard under which they pass “. The electrical installation was replaced, new lighting fixtures were installed and its ceilings were repaired.
Photos also posted on the municipal website show that the subway, whose roof collapsed today, was also among those repaired.
Currently, the metro, whose roof fell today, is closed until the inspection is completed and steps are taken to secure it. The two closest subways, which can be used as an alternative, are about 500 m from the accident.
In the early hours of the afternoon today, the Varna municipal administration issued a statement in which the collapse of part of the suspended ceiling was defined as “fallen plaster”. Here is the full text of the message:
“Immediately after receiving the signal of a fallen plaster in the subway of Knyaz Boris I Blvd., a team was sent to secure the site. The alleged reason is the corrosion of the elements that hold the decorative element, the installation must be repaired . on the ceiling or walls of the facility “.
The content of this text was corrected at 5:25 p.m. The financing of the project under which the underpass is repaired was specified.
