The state’s chief health inspector, Angel Kunchev, announced to Nova TV that family members of the current director of the Sofia Health Inspectorate, Ilonka Maeva, have tested positive for coronavirus and have placed her in quarantine. Due to insufficient staff, Penchev was offered to be appointed deputy director and lead the inspection while Maeva was absent, and he agreed. Before Penchev’s resignation, Maeva was his deputy director.

The situation with the resignation of Dancho Penchev began with the quarantine and early dismissal of the president and the prime minister, after it was established that they had been in contact with an infected person. By order of the Minister of Health, any person in contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 is subject to a 10-day quarantine, starting from the last contact with the confirmed case. A condition that both Radev and Borisov met. However, their quarantine was prematurely terminated by RHI, as Penchev told Dnevnik that Rumen Radev’s decision was his. The day after Borissov’s quarantine was lifted, it turned out that he was infected with a coronavirus and potentially infected other people by the time he ended up alone.
The situation also sparked another confrontation between the president and the prime minister. Borissov announced that Penchev had resigned due to Radev’s quarantine, and warned all ministers, some of whom were also quarantined, to follow all the rules, “because they follow you, and we are not anointed as president, where our services are only a day away. He’s quarantined like an alien. ” He even accused the head of state of being untouchable and suggested that a pre-trial process be initiated against him, as would be the procedure for any Bulgarian citizen who does not comply with quarantine.
In response, the presidency denied all the allegations. “The contradictory explanations of the Executive raise more and more questions about the real reasons for the resignation of Dr. Dancho Penchev. The credibility of the Prime Minister’s statements, not only on this issue, is in doubt,” said the press office of Radev.
The president himself has repeatedly stated that he complies with all measures. He also gave three negative tests.
