The repair of the viaducts in “Hemus” is completed, but not in the tunnels

Traffic on the Hemus highway viaducts will be completely free by the end of this year, RIA reported.

Repairs to the Hemus highway viaducts, which began in 2012, will be completed by the end of this year. This was announced by the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA), referring to the member of the board of directors Ivan Dosev.

Repairs will be completed by November at the latest, weather permitting. When everything is ready, the movement will be released freely. At the moment it is only in one lane. Some of the viaducts will be worked on next year, but their support slabs, asphalt pavement and guardrails are already ready and the next repairs will be based on them, so there will be no traffic restrictions.

However, the completion of long-term works at Hemus does not apply to the tunnels, where restrictions will continue into the winter and probably next year as well. Since most of the repairs are carried out inside the tunnels, the works will not be interrupted during the winter and, with a few exceptions in Hemus, the traffic will continue to be one-way in a pipeline.

This also applies to the Vitinya tunnel, where a completely new ventilation and lighting is being carried out, as well as a new small pipe is being dug between the two main ones, which will be for pedestrians and to pass from one pipe to another.

About a third of the “Europa” highway will be able to have traffic before the end of this year, said Eng. Dosev. This is the central section, about 15 km between Dragoman and Slivnitsa, which will be fully ready by the end of November. The next section, between Sofia and Dragoman, will be ready in 2022. On the other hand, the last section of this road before the border with Serbia has not started yet, the plot plans or the expropriation procedures are not ready.

It is not yet known when the promised repairs will begin on the sections of the Trakia highway between Chirpan and Stara Zagora. In the summer, Regional Minister Petya Avramova announced that they should start in the second half of September. About 40 km of the road are in very bad condition and the speed cannot exceed 90 per hour.
